On 28 September 2026, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) officially launched ISO/UNDP 53001:2026 in Paris, France. It is the first International Standard specifying requirements for a management system designed to optimize an organization’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The launch took place on the opening day of the ISO Annual Meeting, hosted by AFNOR from 28 September to 2 October 2026. The standard combines UNDP’s expertise in sustainable development with ISO’s experience and international standards development network.
According to UNDP’s press release, the standard is applicable to a wide range of organizations, including businesses, government bodies, educational institutions and civil society organizations. In implementing the standard, each organization can focus on the SDGs most relevant to its operating context and stakeholders.
Embedding Sustainability Commitments into Management Practices
ISO/UNDP 53001:2026, entitled Management systems for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — Requirements, specifies requirements for a management system that embeds the Sustainable Development Goals into an organization’s strategy, operations and decision-making.
According to ISO’s overview, the standard helps organizations identify and assess positive and negative impacts, engage in dialogue with stakeholders, set objectives, collect data and evaluate results. The Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) cycle provides the foundation for monitoring progress and driving continual improvement.
The standard also emphasizes the connections between the SDGs, including synergies and potential trade-offs during implementation. This approach helps organizations choose appropriate actions while considering how each decision may affect other goals.
Integration with Existing Management Systems
According to ISO’s press release, a management system based on ISO/UNDP 53001 can be integrated with other management systems, such as those based on ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management. Building on existing processes helps reduce duplication and improve management consistency.
Businesses already using these systems can build on their operational data, allocation of responsibilities, and performance evaluation and review processes. They can then identify what needs to be added to align their management practices with the SDGs, including impact data and stakeholder engagement.
Within this family of standards, ISO/UNDP 53001 specifies the requirements for the management system, while ISO/UNDP 53002 provides implementation guidance. The two standards complement each other, helping organizations understand the requirements and how to apply them in practice.
Implications for Vietnamese Businesses
ISO/UNDP 53001:2026 provides a basis for Vietnamese businesses to manage their sustainability activities consistently. Activities relating to the environment, labour, procurement and product development can be connected through shared objectives, clear responsibilities and monitoring data.
Businesses can begin by studying the standard and reviewing significant impacts across their operations and value chains to identify priority issues. Each objective should be linked to baseline data for comparison, monitoring indicators, a timeframe and a responsible person so that results can be evaluated.
Effective implementation should be demonstrated through practical improvements, such as more efficient resource use, reduced adverse impacts and greater transparency in reporting results. Reliable data and stakeholder engagement help businesses assess progress and adjust their actions accordingly.
According to UNDP, ISO and UNDP will work with partners to support implementation, including the development of sector-specific guidance. The standard is designed to support both the current SDGs and subsequent global goals beyond the 2030 Agenda.
